William Sanders Grace, son of Ernest Sanders Grace and Sarah Jane Shepherd, was born in Lancaster, Lancashire, on Saturday, 8 September 1894.1
William Sanders Grace was married to Evelyn May Dawes on Saturday, 4 August 1917 at Regent Street Chapel, Smethwick, Staffordshire.1
Evelyn & Billy (WS) Grace
(Extracts from conversation (January 1991)
- Lived next door to each other in (97 & 95?) Regent St, Smethwick. Started dating when William asked Evelyn out to a whist drive. (Billy fancied the daughter (?Phyllis) whose brothers were coalminers, but was dissuaded by his father.) Due to the dipsomaniac stepmother (Evelyn's mother died when Evelyn was 7 years old ca. 1904), Evelyn was advised to get married straightaway by the doctor! Married in the Baptist Chapel opposite their homes. Moved into digs. Both Evelyn & Billy had stepmothers. The woman, ESG met in a pub while looking for work in London, turned out to be something of a harridan which convinced Billy that she "killed" his father!
- ESG moved to B'ham in connection with WWI, but when times were hard after the war he sought work in London. Found a good job, and Billy was left to run the household in B'ham.
- Story of their child is an unusual one. When the child was 11 months old, a lighted cigarette thrown from the top of a bus, while they were at a bus queue, landed on the neck of the baby, causing burns and trauma. The child, apparently very intelligent (speaking sentences towards the end of it's first year), when slowly downhill and died in her eighteenth year.
- Grandmother Charlotte (SANDERS) came to live with Ernest and Billy (assume after William died). Apparently, a very solemn and religious ("proper Victorian and bossy")
- Evelyn's father was a renowned maker of brass beds for a world market, a clever designer and draughtsman. Export to Indian princes mentioned.
- Two spinster SANDERS ladies mentioned with affection. Fanny confirmed as Tipton Postmistress - often inviting E&B to tea. The other sister ?Ginny, a school mistress. They lived at their own house, not at the post office.
- Billy told by his father when he left school to get down to a trade: started with book keeper then apprenticed as an engineer. Studied at technical college (night school) four or five nights a week. Brother Ernie had a good education at a Quaker School (Lancaster?).
- Evelyn's maternal grandfather used to visit "Lord Curzon" as a relative.
- Ernest Sanders GRACE in Lancaster - had a good singing voice. Was a member of the Lancaster Excelsior Quartet Party - an alto soloist. Travelled quite a lot incl. London.
- One of Billy's uncles FRED lived in Smethwick "at the bottom of the garden" (Lynton Ave.?), married to Aunt Sally. Also in the Coachbuilding trade.
