His trial stated his age to be 23 (that is, born in 1790); his first ticket-of-leave says “aged 24”; his renewed ticket-of -leave cites his birth date as 1791; the census of 1824 cites his age as 44 which means he was born in 1780; and his death certificate in 1868 says he was 88 years old which means he was born in 1780. The short answer is that once his age was put at 23 for his trial, all tickets-of-leave calculated his age from the date of his conviction, but every opportunity he had to have his own opinion, such as censes, he gave his date of birth as 1780. My point here is that if he was 23 at his trial, he must have been married at 13 and a father at 15, which is possible but extremely unlikely.]¹

     Richard left England forever on 22 Feb 1814 on the 'Surrey I', a first class ship made of first class materials. (The Surrey, or Surry, would become a well-known convict ship making several trips over a period of more than 20 years.)
Richard was assigned to his wife on the day of his arrival and, once cleared of quarantine in North Sydney, was given a “Ticket-of-Leave” on 7 Sept. 1814. His convict number was 21810. His description does not include any interesting tattoos but other details are: light brown hair, hazel eyes, height 5’ 5 ½ “. His complexion was described as "sallow". Either he actually was olive skinned or he was still recovering his health after the terrible voyage.¹
