          On 1863 his name was legally changed to James Spens-Black. He changed his name with the approval by Lord Lion King of Arms.      Craigmaddie House, Stirlingshire, was bought in the late 18th century by James Black, Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1808 to 1809, who married Hannah Shortridge. Later after several changes of ownership it was bought by James Spens BLACK, manufacturer, of the firm John Black & Co., Glasgow. One should not confuse the Lord Provost with "James Black & Co.", calico printers (Glasgow people) and "John Black & Co.", printers (Paisley people).1

     James Spens Black, son of James Black and Sophia Harriet Spens, died in February 1867,"aged 51 years."1

     James Spens Black wrote his Will in 1867; Scottish Archives have the Will registered in 1867 of James Spens Black of Craigmaddie, mentioning 2 wives.1
