On 10 May 1876 Inquest - Death from Poison. A woman named Elizabeth SHARDLOW has died from poison which she took inadvertently. The deceased resided with her husband in Radford's Yard, Sadler Gate. She had for some time been in poor health & had been attended by Dr Goode, as a Dispensary patient. On Saturday week, a man who is not known, wantonly knocked her down as she stood at the top of the entry, and she received a bruise on her temple from a blow or the fall. On Monday afternoon week she was alone in the house and waking from sleep, incautiously drank part of the contents of a bottle containing nitrate of mercury which were used by a militia lodger for polishing his buttons. Violent pain at once followed. Dr Goode was immediately sent for and deceased soon afterwards died. At the inquest held last Friday before Mr Coroner Vallack, George Shardlow, blacksmith, narrated these facts. He did not believe she was in her right mind when she drank the poison, & she had told him immediately afterwards that she had taken a little of the ‘rank stuff’ out of the bottle. She added ‘I did not know what it was’. He got assistance and gave her some salt & water which made her vomit. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased took poison while she was of unsound mind.6
