"Well there is a story behind Annie Appleby....she was born 29 April 1896 (certificate only applied for in the 1960's!!), but for some reason she was never ever told how old she was, so when she wanted to marry, the subject had to come up, but because she did not know her true age. the Registrar put her age down as 16 (which was the legal age to marry without the permission of parents in that year apparently) and which is the age girls were allowed to be married in church. She was married in 1923.
A rather bizzare story, she told the family this in the 1980's. I can only assume that when the Certificate was applied for in 1980, they must have recalculated it from her recollection of events and dates or other documented records. One thing the family ARE sure about though is that she did not have another sister called Ann, only sister Emma (named after Emma Bull). Annie's real mother was called Ann and when she died in 1911, it was recorded as Annie being around 7 years old, but in fact she was older.
Quite a scandal surrounds the family as whilst her mother Ann was dying, Arthur was having an affair with a Gertrude Robinson, who was much younger than him. She was a wicked woman and treated my grandmother terribly, which prompted my grandmother to leave home shortly after her mother Ann died.
Annie worked in a public house - now I doubt if the publican would have taken on a child of 7 to work as a barmaid. She was actually just turned 15.
My grandmother always said that there was never a time or an event which needed her to disclose her age or any document so she went through life in limbo, but she said it never caused her upset or harm. In 1900 Annie was dropped around several relatives, she stayed with her grandmother Emma Bull then went on to others, I would think she was just visiting her father in 1911, she was living with her half brother Charles (one of her father Arthur's children which he had with second wife Gertrude) in 1911 as this was the year her father re-married. Charles was only 1 year old himself, they were both looked after by Emma Bull, at Town Street, Kirk Langley, Derbyshire. Hope all that makes sense!!"
