It was the habit of these raiders to take prisoners all men capable of bearing arms and if they were known to be active partisians, as unionists, they were very liable to be killed. The father (Amos Scheuck) of the woman (Susan) who afterwards became my wife, an invalid and a man eighty years old was taken out and shot in cold blood by these raiders within a few rods of his home and in hearing of his family for no other reason than because of his pronounced Union sympathies."
