ID# 38433, born 11 March 1902, died April 1985
Father* | Albert Bull born 2 May 1862, died 1943 |
Mother* | Jane Stafford born 1861, died 1936 |
Relationship | 12th great-grandson of my Top of Tree Bull |
Henry Bull, son of Albert Bull and Jane Stafford, was born in Kingswinford, Staffordshire, on Tuesday, 11 March 1902, his Birth was Registered at the Stourbridge Register Office in the Apr-May-Jun Quarter of 1902.1,2
The 1911 U.K.Census listed him as a son of the Head of Household - Albert Bull, at 35a Belle View, Wordsley, Kingswinford, Staffordshire, who is recorded as -
Albert Bull Head 48 Married Flint Glass Cutter DBY. Hatton.3
Henry's entry for the 1911 Census was recorded as -
Henry Bull Son 9 --- --- STS. Kingswinford, Dudley.3
Henry Bull, son of Albert Bull and Jane Stafford, was married to Violet Florence E. James in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, in 1926.
Their Marriage was recorded in the Stourbridge Registration District in the Apr-May-Jun Quarter of 1926.4
The assumption that Henry’s absence from the 1939 “census” due to war service is correct. I knew from memory that he served (and was taken prisoner) in the Middle East but was unaware that he had served with the British Expeditionary Force in Europe until I unearthed his Army service book today; the Discharge Certificate, first image below, gives the details.
From messages home and a small number of entries on the Forces War Records site I have been able to establish that having been captured by the Germans in June 1942 he was held first at an Italian POW camp (PG73) at Carpi, near Modena; in 1942/43. From the Easter message home, second image below, he was there until at least April 1943. After the Italian surrender to the Allies, I read that the Germans moved prisoners to camps still under their control; in 1944 he was moved to Stalag 18-D in Maribor in what is now Slovenia and from there was to Stalag 18-A in Wolfsberg, Austria, from where he was liberated in May 1945.
He would have been called up in September 1939 as he had previously been a regular soldier (six years) plus a Reservist commitment. (He joined the Royal Artillery in 1919 and served as Driver of horse-drawn gun carriages. The Royal Army Services Corps had moved on to motorised transport by the time he served in anger.)
