Ernest Alan Holmes, son of John William Holmes and Selina Bull, was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Tuesday, 5 July 1904.

"Ernie Holmes was the first member of the Holmes family to be born in Canada. Like his father, he made his living as a carpenter. As a young man, however, Ernie left Toronto, and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. It seems most likely that Ernie went there about the same time that his uncle, Ernest R. Holmes, moved to Vancouver (see below). It would be in Vancouver, on September 29th 1926, that he married Christina Caroline Campbell (right). Eventually he would settle, and establish a carpentry business, in Portland, Oregon. It was there that Ernie and Chris would raise their daughter, Rosemarie. Ernie died in Portland in 1972; Chris, died there in 1982. They are laid to rest together in Portland."1
