Thomas Campion, son of Thomas Campion, died on Wednesday, 31 July 1901 in Borrowash, Derbyshire, he was survived by his wife Ann Campion nee Shardlow,
"Thomas Campion was found in a ditch by the Canal towpath at Borrowash with his throat having been cut. Thomas had been drinking with a Joseph Harrison, aged 19 years, and they had 'fallen out' after leaving the Public House.
Harrison went on the run and when he was apprehended, had on his person, a coat that was identified as having been owned by the deceased together with a pocket watch and chain that was also indentified by Campion's son James as having belonged to Thomas Campion.
At Harrison's trial he stated that he had been attacked by Thomas Campion but had struck out in his own defence with an open knife that he had been using to 'cut his tobacco'.
The Jury returned a Guilty verdict of Murder and the Judge sentenced Harrison to Death. Although the Jury had not recommended Mercy, a petition was put before the authorities for Mercy to be applied in this case - The Home Secretery subsequently ammended the sentence to Hard Labour for Life. His sentence was served, in part, at Dartmoor Prison".8,9
