Michael McNalty

ID# 28871, born 19 September 1810, died 19 July 1870
Michael McNalty was born in St. Martins, London, Middlesex, on Wednesday, 19 September 1810,
We know he enlisted at the age of 17 on 21 Sep 1827 and had to wait until his 18th birthday to start active service which was on 19 Sep 1828, both of which were a Friday. It is likely he enlisted on or shortly after his 17th birthday and would have been compelled to start his service on or shortly after his 18th birthday. So his birthday must have been on or shortly before the 19th of September 1810. Further his papers show him as underage from 19 Sep 1827 until 18 Sep 1828 and then start a new record for him on the 19 Sep 1828. So it is very likely that his birthday was the 19 Sep 1810.1

Michael McNalty was married to Mary Bull, daughter of William Bull and Margaret, on Friday, 15 March 1833 at Burnley Chapelry, Burnley, Lancashire.

Elizabeth McNalty, daughter of Michael McNalty and Mary Bull, died on Friday, 4 May 1900, in 53 St. Helens Street, Derby, Derbyshire,"Cause: Committed suicide by hanging herself

* Derby Daily Telegraph on Monday May 7th 1900
THE SUICIDE OF A DERBY HOUSEKEEPER.
The fifth and last inquest was on the body of Eliza Jephocote, aged 53, whose death occurred under sad circumstances. - James Bradbury, a slater, of 53 St Helens Street, said the deceased was his housekeeper. Last Friday, he left home about a quarter to six in the morning. She was then lying on the sofa in the front room. He returned home for his breakfast at a few minutes to eight, and found the door fast. He opened it by shaking it. Upon him getting into the home he found the deceased hanging by a rope behind the back door. She was quite dead, and he went at once for the police. The rope produced was the piece that was used. Deceased fetched it from out of a room at the top of the house. Deceased had been much troubled by her daughter, who was 18 years of age, running away from home about 10 weeks ago. She had often asked witness to fetch her back, but witness told deceased not to trouble about her. Deceased had been drinking rather heavily of late, but he had not heard her threaten to commit suicide. - Police constable Whitaker spoke to being called to the house on Friday morning. He cut her down and found that she was dead. There was a chair not far off, and witness was of the opinion that she had stood on the chair to fasten the rope to the back of the door, and then jumped off it. The Jury returned the verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane."1,9
