Cemetery Register Entry - George Tipper, son of George and Dorothy Tipper, of Town End, Cheadle, was Buried.6

It appears that George joined the Army on 5 July 1841 at Liverpool.
He attests that he was born at Alton near Cheadle in Staffordshire, was 24 years old and a Shoemaker. He affirms that he had never been an Apprentice nor was he married. That he was willing to be attested to serve in 85th Regiment of Foot, having received a Bounty of £3 17s 6d.
His description shows that he was apparently 24 years old, 5' 101/2" tall, of fresh complexion, had Hazel eyes and Brown hair and had no distinguishing marks. On taking the Oath of Allegiance and Fidelity he received a further 2 shillings and 6 pence. The Surgeon signed that he was fit for Military Service.
Postings for the 85th (Bucks Volunteers) Regiment of Foot included N.America but were in the West Indies between 1842 and 1845, followed by service in Ireland during the Famine.
George was promoted to the rank of Corporal in January 1844 but he fell foul of the authorities in August of that year when he was reduced by a District Court Martial to his former rank of Private for being Drunk on Piquet Duty at Barbados on or about 27th day of August 1844. He was imprisoned for 11 days, continuing his military service as a Private until his Medical Discharge from the Regiment in October 1848.
Following service in the West Indies, the Regiment returned to Waterford in Ireland where the country was suffering from the Famine. There George became ill and was subsequently Medically Discharged from the Regiment. His Medical Discharge report states that -"Private George Tipper was first affected with pulmonary disease in Limerick in the Summer of 1846, and has never been free from it since then. Has repeatedly been in Hospital for it, and in May & June last had repeated. Has now extensive ...... (unreadable) disease of the lungs, particularly of the right, constant Dyspnoea, copious expectorations and night sweating. Disease constitutional not caused nor aggravated by his own neglect, vice or intemperance. His conduct in hospital has been Good. (Written in Waterford on 1 October 1848)
On his Discharge on 30 October 1848, he was assessed as 'his general character has been Good and he is in possession of one Good Conduct Mark'.7
