John L. Wood

ID# 16611, born 20 October 1821
Father*John Wood born 1784, died 1863
Mother*Mary born say 1795
John L. Wood, son of John Wood and Mary, was born in Hallgate, Wigan, Lancashire, on Saturday, 20 October 1821.1
He was Baptised on Sunday, 6 January 1822 in Hallgate, Wigan, Lancashire .1

John L. Wood was married to Louisa Clifford on Saturday, 27 May 1843 at St. Paul's Church, Quarndon, Derbyshire, Register Entry states - "Married by Licence".2

In the 1851 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 30 March 1851, John was recorded as the Head of the Household at Malthouse Yard, Duffield, Derbyshire, also in the Household were Louisa Wood, Mary Ann Wood, George Fox and Sarah Fox,
the listing for the Household is -
; John Wood     Head     Married     29     Frame Work Knitter (Silk)     LAN. Wigan.3
          ; Louisa Wood     Wife     Married     29     ---     DBY. Quarndon.3
; Mary Ann Wood     Daughter     6     DBY. Quarndon.3
          ; Samuel Wood     Son     4     DBY. Quarndon.3
          ; John Wood     Son     11m     DBY. Duffield.3

In the 1881 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 3 April 1881, John was recorded as the Head of the Household at Wide Lane, Hathern, Leicestershire, also in the Household were Louisa M. Wood,
the listing for the Household is -
; John L. Wood     Head     Married     59     Framework Knitter (Worsted)     LAN. Wigan.
; Louisa M. Wood     Daughter     Unmarried     29     Dress Maker     DBY. Quarndon.4

John L. Wood was left a Widower on the death of his wife, Louisa in 1897 in Longford, Derbyshire.5

In the U.K.Census of 31 March 1901, John was recorded as residing at Longford, Derbyshire.
     John's listing is -
John Wood     79     Living on Own Means     LAN. Wigan.6

John Wood left for the States in we believe 1860. A child was born to Louisa in 1861 and if it was his this fixes the date. His father died in 1863 leaving a useful will. Their eldest child Samuel born in Quarndon went with him. Sam married in the States and had two children Sam and Elizabeth shown on the 1881 census. I have not been able to ascertain when Sam junior or his sister returned to the States but have the census returns showing him there for 1910 and 1920. Family lore says that both John made many journeys across the Atlantic but we think these were mainly Sam. Sam senior married three times and Sam junior also married, both were to American born girls. I have never seen the name Bull on the USA census returns. I wonder if the Wood girl mentioned could have been Elizabeth, born c. 1872? I shall examine the tree to see if there are any other Wood daughters missing.

It is odd but Sam does not come up as a part of the family stories, in fact neither of them does. Sam the elder became an American citizen and only had children with his first wife. His younger brother, another John had several sons, one of whom went to work for Uncle Sam and another, Clifford, went to Canada in 1912. It may be possible to look for emigrants on the Ellis island site but it helps to know an approximate date. It would seem to be between 1885ish onwards. I think very little exists that early. The Woods lived at Rodsley Court farm and another I forget but it should show up on the census.

The Wrights are connected by Louisa and John's daughter marrying into their family.
