     Arthur Fewkes joined the Leicester Yeomanry, at Leicester on 5 August 1914. He was under training in England until 30 October 1914 when he was sent for Duty in France, he was Wounded in Action suffering Gun Shot Wounds to his right arm and left hand at Frezenberg nr Ypres on 13th May 1915 in a disastrous engagement in the notorious 2nd Battle of Ypres, which just about destroyed the whole regiment - approx. 88 killed (including the CO and two Sqdn. Commanders) and about the same number wounded - including Fewkes. (There wouldn’t have been much left of the Leic Yeo after that…)
On 16 May 1915 he was admitted to the Northern General Hospital in Leicester, when he was described as 1728 Trooper Fewkes A.R. of the Leicester Yeomanry with Slight Wounds.
Subsequently Arthur was again Medically Examined marked as "fit for Home Service only". He was transferred to the Labour Corps as a Clerk in the Records Office and ultimately promoted to Staff Sergeant Major.
In 1919 he made a typed and signed Statement of Disability, where he indicates that although he was declared Fit on joining, following his injuries, he had suffered a good deal of pains over his heart, with shortness of breath on exertion during the latter part of his stay in France. He was not aware that he had any heart trouble until he applied for a Commission in August 1915 and that he was rejected as Medically unfit on account of V.D.H.
On his Discharge Documents it states that S.S.M. Fewkes's Date of Disembodiment was 4th of June 1919.⁵
