William Tipper

ID# 32782, born around 1280
William Tipper was born around 1280.
In 1327, "Will'o le Tippere" of Abbots Bromley parish was assessed for 1 shilling in the Lay Subsidy granted to Edward III.
(Lay Subsidy Rolls transcribed in Salt Archaeological Society Proceedings Volume VII Part 1.2, 1886, held by Thomas Salt Library, Stafford; the originals are held by The National Archive, Class E179; there are typed County Lists photographically reproduced by The List & Index Society, Volume 75, Part iv, Staffs-Yorks, 1972).
This subsidy was granted by the First Parliament of Edward III to meet the expenses of a threatened Scottish invasion.
The tax was set at a twentieth part of all moveable goods, principally crops and stock, and excluding land and buildings, and with a de minimis of 10 shillings for the value of the goods.
In practice it probably was only applied to the surplus (deemed to be for sale) over and above the everyday needs of the villager and his family.
"All evidence suggests that only a relatively small number of people in each community paid the tax".
This is the earliest extant Subsidy Roll for Staffordshire.
William is the only evident Tipper on the Roll, Surnames are patchy - some trade names, some locational, some "sons of..", some with no surname at all.
There is also a "Steph'o Tipet" of Slyndon and Aspley parish, near Eccleshall.
William does not appear in the subsequent 1332/3 Subsidy Roll, though Stephen does.1
