John Thomas Osborne

ID# 32925, born about 1871
John Thomas Osborne was born in Norfolk about 1871.1

John Thomas Osborne was first married to Ada E. Dalton , who died in Q3 1903. They had 3 children, Amy E. born 1895; Beatrice A. born 1898 and John E. who was born in 1900.2

John Thomas Osborne was married to Mary Jackson, daughter of Jonathan Jackson and Charlotte Bray, in Dore Church, Sheffield, Yorkshire, on Monday, 3 August 1903.
Their Marriage was recorded in the Ecclesall Bierlow Registration District in the Jul-Aug-Sep Quarter of 1903.3,4

In the 1911 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 2 April 1911, John was recorded as the Head of the Household at Summer Lane, Totley, Derbyshire, also in the Household were Beatrice and John from his first Marriage and Reg Osborne and Charlotte Agnes Osborne,
the listing for the Household is -
; John Tho. Osborne     Head     40     Married     Labourer, General in the Building Trade     YKS. Kingston on Hull.5
          ; Charlotte Osborne     Daughter     ---     6     ---     DBY. Totley.5
          ; Reg Osborne     Son     ---     7     ---     DBY. Totley.5

As noted in the 1911 Census Mary left John Thomas Osborne and went back to live with her parents at 33 Spital Street. Apparently John's first wife Ada Dalton had died in childbirth (presumably her 4th child who also died at or before birth) and she feared the same fate. After Ada's death Mary originally moved to the family home at Totley to be housekeeper and look after the children. Mary and John remained friends throughout their lives and never divorced or remarried.6

The Jackson family had a shop at 33 Spital Street, a general grocers, and Mary was a good cook and had a special reputation for her teacakes. Mary went to live with her grand-daughter Amy Palmer nee Thompson during the latter years of her life at Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex and that's where she died in 1966.6

John Thomas Osborne is a bit of a mystery but this might have been helped by the findings in the 1911 Census of him being 40 and from Kingston upon Hull. On 10/7/1893 when he marries Ada Dalton he gives his age as 23 and that his father was called John Thomas Osborne, a horse ostler at public works, deceased. On the 1901 Census he said he was 31 and born in Norfolk. On 3/8/1903 when he marries Mary Jackson he gives his age at 34 and that his father was John Thomas Osborne, a labourer, deceased. All the details we had led us to believe he was born between 11/7/1869 and 3/8/1869 from Norfolk with a dead father called John Thomas Osborne, but we couldn't find any evidence of this anywhere in Norfolk. We had found a John Thomas Osborne in Hull but the ages didn't quite match but it now looks like this might be our John Thomas Osborne. Another reason why we believed him to be born in Norfolk was that at his marriage to Mary Jackson the vicar was Revd George Claridge, Vicar of St Thomas Church, Heigham, Norfolk and it seems a bit strange it wouldn't be the local vicar or one from a neighbouring parish unless he was a friend. John was known by the nickname Sweedy (not sure how it was spelt) but whether that was anything to do with being from Sweden or growing swedes or something else is anyone's guess.
