Edward Oldfield

ID# 32915, born 1701, died 1729
Edward Oldfield was born in Derbyshire in 1701.1

Edward Oldfield was married to Sarah Bull, daughter of Robert Bull and Ann Bowyer, in March 1722 at St. Andrew's Church, Cubley, Derbyshire.1

     Edward Oldfield died in 1729.1

The inventory of goods and chattels gives a good picture of his home, which appears to be separate from ‘the shop’. The house had a ‘brewing room’ with a still. An assortment of chairs, stools, desks, tables and chests were in three rooms. The ‘master’ bedroom had a ‘canopy bed’. The kitchen had a grate for cooking with tongs and a shovel and candles. An earthernware crock and pan was used for cooking, and plate for eating. The ‘shop’ was of three rooms, with various furnishings including an oval table. The value of household goods is about seventy pounds.
The value of the ‘shop stock’ was about thirty pounds, comprising of mortars and utensils, drugs, oyles (oils), plaster and ointments, chemical drugs and bottles. A storage cellar was part of the ‘shop’ with some lumber (timber) being included.
While not rich, they appear to have been comfortable, taking into account that they were married for only 7 years.
In that time, they had three children; Humphrey (Jan1722-1776) born out of wedlock it would seem, at Uttoxeter, John (1724-1725) and Edward (born 1726).
It is said (by Humphrey Oldfield 1936) that Edward dissipated the greater part of his patrimonial estate. HO states that he ‘gave up his time entirely to field sports and the turf ‘in which he spent his money. This seems somewhat overstated, seeing that he owned a shop with an inventory of stock.
Humphrey, the eldest son was intended for the same profession as his father. He resided at Stone, eleven miles from Uttoxeter at which place, Edward, his father had property, presumably left to him by Humphrey and Letitia. This he later sold. He married Elizabeth Nichols Nov. 1746, as recorded in the Maer, St Peters Parish Register in 1730.1
