     "I'm fairly sure from searches in the GRO records here and the Canadian Archives in Toronto that Bassett and Ellen were never married. I think that Ellen just left her husband at Biddulph Mill, went to live with Bassett, had two children, went to Canada, had another child that died and they just lived as man & wife." - Heather Eaton, by e-mail to Martin Jackson March 2003.8

He trained in England before embarking for France. While in England, he visited my grandparents in Derby. My father could recall the visit. Bassett Ashley and my grandparents are cousins, my father is named after Bassett --- H.D.Eaton.
