Death of Mrs. Rachel Holloway

The death occurred at her residence “Redhouse”, Eldon Street, Goulburn, of Mrs. Rachel Muriel Holloway, aged 79, a resident of Goulburn for more than 60 years and a former Mayoress.
Born at Parramatta, she was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McInnes and was educated at Bourke Street Public School, Goulburn.
Following her marriage, she went to South Africa. Her husband, the late Leonard Holloway, and his brothers, trading as Holloway Bros., were master builders and during the Boer War carried out military contracts.
Mrs. Holloway returned to Goulburn in the early1900’s and her husband carried on as a master builder here. He built quite a number of residences and Auburn Street shops.
He also built his own home, “Redhouse”, which was among the first tiled homes in Goulburn. This accounts for the origin of the name of the home.
The late Mr. Holloway was Mayor of Goulburn during a period towards the end of the First World War. He died in 1930.
The late Mrs. Holloway is survived by two daughters, Marjorie (Mrs. G. H. Leslie) and Rita (Goulburn), four brothers, Charles. Monty, Ewen and Mervyn (Goulburn) and a sister, Cora (Lewisham). Two sons, Lionel (1st A.I.F.) and Alan, two brothers, Alex. and Leslie, and a sister, Annie, predeceased her. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The service, conducted by the Dean of Goulburn, Very Rev. A. C. King, at St. Saviour’s Cathedral to-day, preceded interment at the General Cemetery. The Rev. L. Murchison was the organist.4

Leslie James Holloway, son of Mr. Richard and Mrs. Emily L. Holloway, was born at Goulburn, New South Wales, on 30 September 1890. He was educated at King's College, Goulburn, and joined the service of the Bank on 16 March 1908 at Henty. His subsequent transfers were to Coolamon in April, 1908; Ganmain, August, 1908; Coolamon, March 1911; and Coonamble in November, 1911; and to Head Office in March, 1915.
He enlisted a year later and sailed for England as corporal, but reverted automatically to the ranks on landing. However, he received his stripes in England again in 1917, and became acting-sergeant in April. Subsequently he was offered an appointment as sergeant on the Training Staff, which he declined in order to get into the firing line.
In May, 1917, he was on his way to join his unit in France, when he was intercepted and detailed to assist in holding the line at Bullecourt on 4 May. He was killed five days later by a shell at Bullecourt.3

Ann Perry

ID# 6383, born around 1815, died 8 May 1887
Father*Joseph Perry born say 1780
Mother*Ann Hughes born say 1780
Ann Perry, daughter of Joseph Perry and Ann Hughes, was born in Haughton, Staffordshire, around 1815, estimated from 1861 Census information.

Ann Perry was married to Samuel Waltho on Sunday, 25 December 1842 at The Parish Church, Gnosall, Staffordshire, Samuel WALTHO of full age Bachelor, Labourer of Knightley (Staffordshire) son of Joseph WALTHO labourer and Ann PERRY of full age spinster, servant of Knightley daughter of Joseph PERRY labourer, by Banns. Both signed with their marks. Ceremony performed by Fearon Jenkinson. Witnesses: Mary PERRY and Martha JENKINSON.1

The 1861 U.K.Census listed her as the Wife of the Head of Household - Samuel Waltho, at 112 Stafford Street, Walsall, Staffordshire, who is recorded as -
Samuel Walters     Head     Married     52     Ag.labourer     STS. Hixon.2
Ann's entry for the 1861 Census was recorded as -
Ann Walters     Wife     Mar     53     STS. Haughton.2

The 1871 U.K.Census listed her as the Wife of the Head of Household - Samuel Waltho, at 9 Lower North Street. Rushall, Walsall, Staffordshire, who is recorded as -

Ann's entry for the 1871 Census was recorded as -
Ann Waltho     Wife     Married     55     STS. Ortin (Haughton ?)3

Ann Waltho nee Perry was left a Widow on the death of her husband, Samuel before 1881.

In the 1881 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 3 April 1881, Ann was recorded as the Head of the Household at 9 Lower North Street, Rushall, Staffordshire, also in the Household were James Waltho,
the listing for the Household is -
          ; Ann Reynold     Head     Widow     65     ---     STS. Harton.4
; James Reynold     Son     Unmarried     36     Platelayer     STS. Harton.4

Although the 1881 census detail is for the wrong name I believe that this is Ann Waltho nee Perry in 1881. Everything else fits ie address, age and birth place, albeit with another variation in spelling. Even stranger is the fact that the name is REYNOLD(S) as my great aunt said Ann had become Mrs Reynolds and had twin sons!(:CR.)5

Ann Waltho nee Perry, daughter of Joseph Perry and Ann Hughes, died on Sunday, 8 May 1887, in Lower North Street, Rushall, Walsall, Staffordshire,"#384 - Ann Waltho, Female, 72 years, Widow of Samuel Waltho a Labourer.
