Gill, Son of 93 Palmerston Street.18      Monumental Inscription - In loving membory of James Gill, born at Churchstanton, Somerset, 1822, died at Derby, February 4th, 1913. He served in HM 41st Regiment, and took part in the Afghan War 1842, and in the Russian War (Crimean War) 1854-5. Also to Mary Anne, his wife, who died April 5th 1901 aged 73 years. Also to Thomas, son of the above, who died February 19th, 1869, aged 8 years. Erected by their surviving children in grateful remembrance. "The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God/" Also Edith Watterson, daughter of the above, who died August 10th 1922 aged 58 years. subsequently on the Permanent Staff of 1st Derby Militia until 18 July 1876 when an extra 6d pension was awarded.

James joined the 41st Welch Regiment. He went to India in 1841, and served under General
Nott in the Second Afghan War where he was present at the capture of Istalif. Service
followed in England and Ireland. In 1854, he was sent to the Turkish frontier and later to the
Crimea where he fought at Alma, Inkerman, Balaclava and the terrible trench war for
Sebastapol 1854-55 - although James was not at the fall of Sebastapol. At Inkerman, he was
one of 525 men who opposed a Russian attack of several thousands, routing them. In March
1855 he was posted to Malta to train recruits, as Colour Sergeant.
Then the 41st Regiment was transferred to the Ionian Isles (Corfu, Cephalonia, etc), and from
there to Jamaica, where James and Harry were born. In 1860 the regiment was again in
England, After resigning from the 41st, James and
his family came to Derby later in 1861 as part of the 1st Derby Militia.
James had four medals: one for service in the 1842 Afghan War; two for the Crimean War
1854-55 (one was the Crimean War Medal with 3 clasps for Alma, Inkerman and Sebastopol,
and the other was the Turkish Crimea Medal awarded by the Sultan of Turkey to all Allied
forces on active service); and the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) which James received in
1898 because only a certain number were held at any one time. (details researched by Jean Ffrench.)
