I have followed up on the witnesses to the Cooper/Bull marriage of 9 June 1885.

Isa Walster was born in 1866 in Wisconsin and was a school teacher.

John Gamble was a brother b.1824 of William Cooper’s mother, Ann b.1837 nee Gamble. John is listed already in 1860 in Troy, County of Sauk. William’s aunt Pamela b.1823, married to James Harrison, is listed in the 1850 Census in New York. His uncle Alfred b.1834 was living in Monona, White County.

From the Censuses it would seem that John made himself 3 years younger. The Probate document confirms relationship.

So Mildred’s elopement was not completely into the unknown. Her underage marriage may have been accepted by the authorities as she had a teacher and a long-standing member of the community as witnesses.

It’s interesting that later on she could afford tickets to visit England.13

Ann Bull, daughter of Hezekiah Bull and Emma Overton Hammersley, was born in Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire, on Tuesday, 12 May 1874, born at 11.30 a.m. Details of birth & death as written in The Family Bible.1,2,3

The 1881 U.K.Census  listed her as a daughter of the Head of Household - Hezekiah Bull, at Potlock House, Findern, Derbyshire, who is recorded as -

Ann Bull, daughter of Hezekiah Bull and Emma Overton Hammersley, was married to Joseph ("Uncle Joe") Shaw on Tuesday, 14 February 1899 at St. Wilfred's Parish Church, Barrow on Trent, Derbyshire.
The details from the Marriage Certificate are - Joseph Shaw, Age 23, Bachelor, Dairyman, of Littleover. Father John Shaw - Farmer & Ann Bull, age 24, Spinster, of Barrow-on-Trent. Father - Hezekiah Bull, Farmer. Married in the Church of Barrow on Trent according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by me, William Baxter. This Marriage was solemnized between us, Joseph Shaw and Ann Bull in the presence of us: Annie Elizabeth Shaw, John Shaw, William Clemisha(?). Certified to be a true copy of an entry in the certified copy of a register of Marriages in the Registration District of Shardlow.5

According to their printed Visiting Card on the occasion of their marriage, their first home was 10 Burton Road, Derby. This number seems to place it near the very bottom (south end) of Babington Lane, long since demolished. Tantalisingly, an O.S. map of this area dated ~ 1914 shows certain house numbers with a very small gap between Nos.8 and 12, too small to accommodate a "No.10" Perhaps it was instead further out of Derby town centre at Burton Road, Littleover, Derby?
They had a farm at Stanton Barns, Stanton-by-Bridge, near Swarkestone, Derbys in the early 1900's.

The 1901 U.K.Census  listed her as a daughter of the Head of Household - Hezekiah Bull, at Barrow on Trent, Derbyshire, who is recorded as -

Arthur George "Cousin Arthur" Holmes

ID# 5221, born 31 December 1916, died 18 March 1997
Father*Arthur Holmes born 18 Feb. 1889
Mother*Clara born 8 Jul.
Arthur George "Cousin Arthur" Holmes, son of Arthur Holmes and Clara, was born in England on Sunday, 31 December 1916.1

Arthur George "Cousin Arthur" Holmes was married to Evelyn E. Kelley on Saturday, 18 June 1938.
Arthur George "Cousin Arthur" Holmes was celebrated their Golden Wedding on 18 June 1988 this was taken probably 18-Jun-1988, when they had a celebration, for family and friends, of their 50th Wedding Anniversary at Knights of Columbus Hall, 235 Queenston Street, St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

Arthur George "Cousin Arthur" Holmes, son of Arthur Holmes and Clara, died on Tuesday, 18 March 1997, in St.Catharines, Ontario, Canada.1

Date of birth per his Order of Funeral Service - this confirms Aunt Alice's Birthday Book entry for 31 Dec. "George Arthur 10yrs 1926" as referring to her brother Arthur's 1st son.

On 3-Dec-1988 their Christmas newsletter reported their "children" as being 46, 41, 38 and 36. The then 41 year old must have been "Scott, Canada - Born 1948" for May 1, and the then 46 year old probably "Keith, Canada Born 1944" (altered from "1948"). Who was the then 38 year old - perhaps Ross ?
In which case, who then was "Larry Leonard Holmes, Canada" entered by Aunt Alice in her Royal B'day Book as "Born 1950" for Mar 20th ?

Canada newspaper clipping for his death :- "HOLMES, Arthur George - At The St.Catharines General Hospital on Tuesday Mar 18, 1997, in his 81st year, beloved husband of Evelyn E. (Kelley) Dear father of Keith E., Scott K. and his wife Ellen, all of St.Catharines; Ross K. and his wife Diane of Niagara-on-the-Lake; and Barbara K. of St.Catharines, grandfather of Gregory R. and Daniel S.
