(NB : watch : there is the odd slight fluctuation in the children's ages from 1851 Census to 1861 Census.)9

These were all re-elected, excepting that Mr Warrington was elected to supply Mr R.Hammersley's place. The other unsuccessful candidates were Messrs. Astley, Dean, Haynes, Sugden and Tatton."

(b), (c) & (d) were extracted by DJH from microfilmed copies of the "Staffordshire Advertiser (VOL LXVIII)" held in Shire Hall Library, Stafford, on February 4th 2002. It seems that in April/May 1863 the "Advertiser" may have been reporting on the Leek Improvement Commissioners meetings well over a week later than the meetings themselves, so that the references to 'Tuesday last' cannot be relied on to pinpoint absolute dates.

Conclusion, for now, is that Robert HAMMERSLEY died on 11th April 1863.
