After leaving school in the mid-1920's he worked for John Butters, Pawnbrokers variously at Regent Street, Willow Row, Balaclava Road all in Derby, and also at Uxbridge Street in Burton-on-Trent.
Owing to a broken leg playing football, he was rejected for military service in WW2, and he then worked as a Stores Issuer at the Railway in Derby, where his boss was Roland ("Rol") Hall - no relation.
Dad and Mam's address after their wedding in 1935 was 45 Warren Street, Alvaston.
From about 1944 they moved to keep the 'corner shop' (but halfway up the street) no.52 Warren Street, Alvaston for the last couple or so years of the War. They then sold that business to Uncle Lance (Dad's brother) who straight away let another brother, Noel Hall manage it for him.
At this point Dad went to work as yard foreman at Hall & Martin, London Road, Crewton, Derby - a timber merchants and joinery shop, another business owned by Uncle Lance in partnership with a Mr Martin. Dad and Mam often referred to 'having helped Uncle Lance out financially' around this time - but I never knew in what particular way.
Around the beginning of this time I believe Uncle Lance was getting divorced from his wife, Ruth. In the late 1950-s Dad left Hall and Martin's and did a number of clerical jobs, one for a Cable manufacturers on Alfreton Road, Derby, eventually joining Rolls-Royce in about 1966. He retired on 2-Dec-1975 a little under a year before he was 65.

Collapsed and died from heart attack, in the Post Office, Shardlow Road, Alvaston, Derby on 15-Feb-1979. Taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary - formally identified by me accompanied by my cousin, Noel Hall (Uncle Reg's son). He had suffered one earlier heart attack in the mid-1960's and had been suffering from angina during the rest of his life.

Retirement from Rolls-Royce (1971) Ltd, Derby Engine Division : letter dated 2 Dec 1975 "S.B.Hall Esq, 19 Warren Street, Alvaston, Derby, DE2 8RU. Dear Mr Hall, On the occasion of your early retirement I want to express to you, on behalf of Rolls-Royce (1971) Limited our very sincere thanks for the good service you have given the company during your almost ten years with us. Although we have not personally had much contact I have always been aware of the high regard for your reliability and hard work in which you have been held by Barry Bridge and Bill Harrison. You have our best wishes for the future and we all hope that you will enjoy a long and happy retirement. Yours sincerely J.A.Newton, Divisional Purchase Manager."
