At the outbreak of war in Seprember 1939 he joined the Metropolitan Police War reserve and was attached to police stations in Harlesden and Acton. During this period he met Gladys through the Cerebos connection.

Around 1966 he and Gladys sold the house and bought a confectioner/tobacconist shop at 52 Church Road, Northolt, Middlesex.
About 1975 Bill and Gladys decided to retire and sold the business to buy a bungalow in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.
Some 10 years later Bill contracted Parkinson's disease and Gladys took care of him as his condition deteriorated over the next few years until eventually he died from bronchial pneumonia, brought on by his condition.1
