At the outbreak of war in Seprember 1939 he joined the Metropolitan Police War reserve and was attached to police stations in Harlesden and Acton. During this period he met Gladys through the Cerebos connection.
In October 1943 he volunteered to join the Royal Navy and served in HMS Raleigh and Drake (shore bases) before going to sea in HMS Cygnet, an anti submarine sloop in February 1944. As a result of his police experience, he transferred to the Regulating Branch (naval police) in October 1944 as an acting Regulating Petty Officer (Master at Arms). He was discharged in August 1946 from service on the battleship HMS Rodney.
After his marriage to Gladys in 1947, they moved to his father's house at 38 Longstone Avenue, Harlesden, London, NW10, which he inherited after his father's death, and he continued clerical/accounts work for various local companies.
Around 1966 he and Gladys sold the house and bought a confectioner/tobacconist shop at 52 Church Road, Northolt, Middlesex.
About 1975 Bill and Gladys decided to retire and sold the business to buy a bungalow in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.
Some 10 years later Bill contracted Parkinson's disease and Gladys took care of him as his condition deteriorated over the next few years until eventually he died from bronchial pneumonia, brought on by his condition.1
