     Joseph Tipper was married to Eliza Woodward about 1846 at Staffordshire The Q3 1848 Wolverhampton birth registration is (sadly) wrong. Despite long searching by myself and my cousins, we can find no trace of a marriage for our gggparents Joseph and Eliza Woodward. Their first child was born in 1847. I can see the Eliza "Westwood" on the same page as a Joseph Tipper on the 1848 registration, but cross-checking the Censuses, his bride is Rosanna Spruce - they are together on the 1851 Census living with her parents in Bilston. [Confusingly, she is incorrectly transcribed by Ancestry as "Roschermund" (actually "Rosehannah") and her parents as "Spence" (actually "Spruce"). There is an IGI baptism for her father Barnaby Spruce to confirm this.] This Joseph is from the large Sedgley clan, which I've just started to attack. An enjoyable bit of detective work!.4

Eliza Woodward

ID# 14560, born 1821, died 1895
     Eliza Woodward was born in Ellastone, Staffordshire, in 1821.1

     Eliza Oakden (nee Woodward) 1818:
184? marriage to Joseph Tipper not found - it is possible that they never actually married. From their children's birth certificates (held by Elaine Rignall) the following information can be pieced together for Eliza's origins:
James 1850, mother = "Eliza Tipper formerly Woodward";
Mary 1852 and Charles 1854 = "Eliza Tipper formerly Oakden";
Frederick 1860 = "Eliza Tipper late Oakden, formerly Woodward";
The presumption from Frederick's birth certificate is that Woodward was her maiden name and that she had a first marriage to an Oakden. This is confirmed by the marriage of an Eliza Woodward Q2 1843 Ashbourne to Edwin Oakden; Edwin was baptised 28.07.1816 Ellastone, the son of Simon and Mary; there is no BMD death for him in the 1840's but the presumption is that he died then and Eliza remarried. Eliza Woodward was baptised in Ellastone on either 19.07.1818 to Samuel and Hannah Woodward or, one week later on 26.07.1818!, to Thomas and Sarah Woodward (CHECK Ellastone register that this is not an IGI transcription duplication]. No marriage for either of these couples has been found on IGI. Thomas is probably Thomas baptised Ellastone 26.11.1786, the son of Robert Woodward and Ann Taylor. One of the two Elizas was living as a F(arm) S)ervant) in 1841 to John Carter, a Farmer at Colwich, Ellastone; Edwin Oakden not found om 1841 Census;
[Interestingly, if Eliza's maiden name was in fact Oakden, there is also an Eliza Oakden baptised at Ellastone on 01.11.1818, the daughter of William and Mary Ann Oakden; William Oakden married Mary Ann Buxton on 07.10.1810 at Thorpy by Ashbourne; William Oakden was probably baptised at Waterfall 16.05.1784 to John and Elizabeth Oakden or 08.03.1785 to William and Hannah Oakden; Mary Ann Buxton was probably baptised at Thorpe 17.06.1789 to Francis and Dorothy Buxton];
Our great great grandparents Joseph and Eliza lived in Hanbury Woodend almost to the end of the century, raising five sons (with five other children dying in infancy), with forty three grandchildren.2

     "William and Hannah moved to Hainton in Lincolnshire in 1810 and had eight more children. He was the inn-keeper of the Heneage Arms in the village. Had it not been for John being born in Staffordshire and recording it in the 1851 census I would have had considerably more difficulty making the connection to another county!. His brother Anthony also moved to Hainton and married there (Catherine Brumpton) in 1812. He was a game-keeper. Thus it is probable that any Titley with Lincolnshire ancestors is a descendent of either William or Anthony" - Jane Titley - 2005.3
