Herbert enlisted into the Scots Guards on 29 May 1915. He was issued with his Service Number 14020 for short service for the duration of the War (age 21 years 4 months, a Miner of Hanbury, 5' 8", 35" chest, Single).
He served at Lichfield and Caterham, probably for Basic Training and then to France on 5 October 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 31 July 1916 and Corporal 1 August 1917, to Sergeant on 2 August 1918. During this period he was granted 3 weeks home leave on 17 November 1917. During his service he received 4 reprimands on conduct. Herbert was wounded in action by mustard gas attack on 14 September 1918, he was treated in several hospitals in France returning to the Battalion in the field on 24 October 1918. After the end of the war he returned to Dunkirk and then Clipstoneon 13 January 1919. He was Discharged from Army Service claiming no disability.5
