Rose Mackay

ID# 34700, born 1890
Rose Mackay was born in 1890.

Rose Mackay was married to Arthur Ernest Tipper, son of William Tipper and Margaret Sophia Golding, on Saturday, 2 October 1909.
All Saints Church Marriage Register - "Entry #62 - Arthur Ernest Tipper, a Bachelor aged 35, an Insurance Manager of Tientsin, China, son of William Tipper deceased, Married by Banns 02.10.1909 All Saints Church, Tientsin to Rose Mackay, a Spinster aged 19 of Tientsin, daughter of Alexander Hugh Mackay, a Merchant.
Both Signed the Register and were Witnessed by Alexander Hugh Maskray and Ralph Martin Gatliff."1

Between 1943 and 1945 Arthur and his wife were among the British residents in China who were interned in harsh conditions by the invading Japanese forces in Weihsien Civilian Assembly Centre - "There were also...members of the British Municipal Council in Tientsin who had convened to deal with the problem of Sydney Yeates." (Midnight in Peking, p243).
"Arthur Ernest Tipper, Australian Nationality, d.o.b.02.09.74, Company Director, 187 Victoria Road, Block 39/4; Mrs Rosa "Rose" V Tipper, Australian Nationality, d.o.b.28.12.90, Housewife, Block 39/4". (Weihsien Centre Internee List, see www.weihsien-paintings.org, a website of survivors' memories).
"Located two miles east of Weihsien, the American Presbyterian Compound in Weihsien was known by the Chinese name of "Courtyard of the Happy Way." Its Shadyside Hospital, constructed in 1924, was considered one of the best constructed mission hospitals in North China. However, by the time internees arrived, all useable equipment had been looted or carried off. Student dormitories, consisting of rows and rows of rooms, as well as large buildings originally used as classrooms and libraries, housed the internees. One of the largest camps in China, Weihsien housed, at one time or another, almost 2,250 internees. Two internees who escaped provided information on the camp to OSS operatives in Chungking, while remaining in the vicinity of the camp with Nationalist guerillas. At the end of the war Weihsien was the scene of an exciting drama when a seven member OSS team parachuted near the camp and were welcomed by the overjoyed internees. Afterwards, Chinese Communist guerilla activity prevented the evacuation of the camp. After an initial group was removed by rail to Tsingtao, the railway line was blown up. Internees were finally airlifted out by Army Air Force planes.© Captives of Empire, by Greg Leck". (www.tientsien.paintings.org).
"Incidentally, the Red Cross parcels received at the camp over the internment years came from the Australian Red Cross and the American Red Cross [32]. The Australian Red Cross parcels were arranged by a Sydney relation of the interned Tipper family from Australia." (www.tientsien.paintings.org). between 1943 and 1945.23
