     Horace Cyril Clarke was educated at St. Thomas' School at Heaton Chapel, where he won a Whitworth Art Scholarship and studied at Stockport College of Further Education. He received the City and Guilds Silver Medal in 1934 going on to become a silk designer at Macclesfield Silk.5

     On 23 November 1934 he sailed from London on the SS "Baradine", his destination was Port Said, Egypt (although the ship was bound for Australia). His given address was 2 Arlington Drive, Woodsmoor, Stockport and that his age was 28 years. His Profession was listed as - Teacher.

     From 4 December 1934 to October 1939 he was a Teacher of Woven Fabrics at the School of Applied Art in Cairo, Egypt.

     He came back to England to get married, sailing from Port Said on the SS "Naldera" and arriving at Plymouth on 20 June 1935, his address was given as 2 Arlington Drive.6

     On 14 September 1935 Horace and Edith sailed to Egypt, travelling from London on the Orient Line ship "Orsova". Details - of 2 Arlington Drive, Woodsmoor, Stockport, Art Teacher, landing at Port Said, Egypt.

     They sailed from Port Said to Southampton on the "Scharnhorst" of the Norddeutscher Lloyd line of Bremen arriving on 24 July 1936, there is a passenger list showing that they travelled from Liverpool to Egypt on Anchor Line ship "Tuscania" sailing on 1 October 1936.     Their address was given as 1 Yewlands Drive, Broughton, Preston, Lancashire.7

     They returned to England because of the impending War and settled in Preston, Lancashire, where Edith's father had a Credit Draper's business. Horace worked there until 1956.5

          The U.K. 1939 Registration for England & Wales of 29 September 1939 listed him with William Shaw, at 1 Yewlands Drive, Fullwood, Preston, Lancashire, who is recorded as - William Shaw;     DoB - 14 June 1872     Male;     Draper     Married.8
