          On 1863 his name was legally changed to James Spens-Black. He changed his name with the approval by Lord Lion King of Arms.

     Craigmaddie House, Stirlingshire, was bought in the late 18^th century by James Black, Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1808 to 1809, who married Hannah Shortridge. Later after several changes of ownership it was bought by James Spens BLACK, manufacturer, of the firm John Black & Co., Glasgow. One should not confuse the Lord Provost with "James Black & Co.", calico printers (Glasgow people) and "John Black & Co.", printers (Paisley people).¹

     Major-General Wilsone Black was a British soldier and colonial administrator, who became an Acting Administrator in Hong Kong for a period between February to November of 1898. He was eventually succeeded by Sir Henry Arthur Blake, who became the 12th Governor of Hong Kong.³
