The 189 ton DUKE OF YORK was a whaling and trading bark owned by the South Australia Company. She was under the command of Captain Robert Clark(e) Morgan and left London on 24 February, 1836, equipped for whaling. (Another source said she left England on 5 April). She reached Kangaroo Island on 27, July 1836.
Some passengers, including some adults whose passage was charged to the Emigration Fund, were on board as well. The First Report of the Commissioners of Colonisation of South Australia gave the ship's complement as thirty-eight. A list compiled from the Company's records gave the names of twenty passengers and twenty-six seamen, in addition to the Captain.
Several of the passengers listed had significant appointments in the service of the South Australian Company. Samuel Stephens was the first Colonial Manager, and on behalf of his employers, he established the settlement of Kingscote as a site for their projected whaling venture. From its location in relation to the mouth of the River Murray, and the Gulfs of St Vincent and Spencer, he considered it as a possible shipping port for the future.
Another of the passengers, Thomas H. Beare, was Superintendent of Buildings and Labourers, while D.H. Schreyvogel was engaged as a clerk. Chas. Powell and W. West were gardeners; Henry Mitchell was a butcher; and John Neale was an assistant carpenter.

“Christ Church, Yankalilla, has now four stained glass windows, counting the Hudson Beare two lights as one. The last mentioned was the first placed in the church, and served as the east window for many years. It was given by Mrs. Brooks in memory of her father, Mr. Thomas Hudson Beare who came out in the Duke of York in 1836 as a second in command of the S.A. Company. In later life Hudson Beare took up land at Myponga, and died there on November ?, 1861, and was buried in the Methodist Chapel yard there, according to the rites of the Church of England. The service was read by the Rev. Astley Cooper. The window is in the Norman style, with geometrical tracing.6,7

THOMAS HUDSON BEARE
BURIAL PLACE AT MYPONGA
To the Editor
Sir —
I have had a conversation with Dr. C. Fenner about the landing at Kangaroo Island by Thomas Hudson Beare.
I remarked to the doctor that no mention had been made of the burial place of Thomas Hudson Beare.
I told him that he lies buried in the Myponga Methodist Cemetery, about two yards on the south-east corner of the building.
My wife placed some flowers on the spot when we were passing through Myponga on Monday.
A few years ago the grave was visible, but two years ago the ground was levelled, and no sign was left to mark the place.
In the Church of England Church in Yankalilla, we have a memorial window in memory of him.
Mrs. Kennedy, the only surviving daughter, gave us all the details —
I am, Sir, &c.,
(Rev.) N. H. LOUWYCK.8

"Compilation of a list of passengers carried on the vessels which arrived in South Australia in the early period of its history is fraught with difficulties. The absence of records is accounted for no doubt, by accidental destruction by fire of official papers. Figures given in the S.A. Commissioners' Reports do not accord with the number of names recorded in the lists of persons carried, when these are available. The South Australian Company's papers, deposited in the South Australian Archives have made it possible to compile an authentic list of persons who embarked for South Australia in the Company's vessels". ).
