John reveals that he was born near a tributary of the Dove, a few miles south of Ashbourne, " twas in these borders I first knew a home, / and the pebbly brooks began to roam",
     When he was 'quite young', (probably about 1780) his father removed to Nottinghamshire and settled in Sherwood Forest (p.10 and notes)
     He was educated in Sutton in Ashfield, near Mansfield, in the seminary where he was taught by the Rev. Thomas Cursham (p.12). Cursham died on 16 January 1805 (Gentleman's Magazine, 1805, i.184). Having matriculated at St.Edmund's Hall, Oxford on 14 March 1798, he obtained his B.A. in 1801 he instantly married, by licence, on 2 July 1801, Elizabeth Wrathall, of the City and Diocese of London.
      An important reference to his Mother is on p.152 of Poems & Translations ' The Author here entreats the Reader's indulgence, while he pays a grateful tribute to the memory of a dear mother', She had reached her 78th year, her faculties entire, when she died on 27 May 1814. ' She encouraged her sons to read the Bible, and her youngest son, knowing her regard for that sacred volume, sent her, some years ago, an excellent quarto Bible of a good type from the Society for promoting Christian Knowledge. She will be lamented by her Husband, her Children and her friends ... and by him whose hand writes this, her memory will be always held dear. At the distance of one hundred and fifty miles, he was deprived of the melancholy pleasure of witnessing her tranquil end' in 1814.

Head Master of the Grammar School, from 1820, Curate of Yelvertoft from 1820, Curate of Clipston from 2 August 1824, left Clipston in 1840; not traced between 1840 and 1847, when he became perpetual Curate of St.John's, Walthamstow.      William Ridgard, son of William Ridgard and Jane Adams, was born in Kirk Langley, Derbyshire, in 1848, his Birth was Registered at the Belper Register Office in the Jul-Aug-Sep Quarter of 1848.¹      He was Baptised on Sunday, 15 October 1848 in St. Michael's Church, Kirk Langley, Derbyshire .
     St. Michael's Church Baptismal Register Entry - "Entry #663 - "George, son of Jane and William Ridgard, a Blacksmith of Kirk Langley, was Baptised"
     This is a TRUE transcription of the Parish Register, BUT there is no Record at the G.R.O. of a George Ridgard as a child of William & Jane nor does the name appear in subsequent Census Returns. There are Birth and Death Records for a George Ridgard, son of an unmarried Ridgard though in the December Quarter.
     Therefore either Baptism Entry is wrongly ascribed to GEORGE or William's Baptism was not entered."²

     The 1851 U.K.Census  listed him as a son of the Head of Household - William Ridgard, at Derby Road, Kirk Langley, Derbyshire, who is recorded as -

     Elizabeth Bull, daughter of Benjamin Bull and Joan Burton, was born in Cubley, Derbyshire, in 1649, possible place of Birth -.
     She was Baptised on Friday, 21 January 1650 in St. Andrew's Church, Cubley, Derbyshire .
     St. Andrew's Church Baptismal Register Entry - "daughter of Benjamin Bull was Baptised."¹ Her baptism name was Isabel Bull.

     Elizabeth Bull, daughter of Benjamin Bull and Joan Burton, died in February 1650.

     She was buried in St. Andrew's Church, Cubley on Tuesday, 8 February 1650.²

     Joan Burton was born in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, about 1619.


     Joan Burton was married to Benjamin Bull, son of Thomas Bull and Margaret, on Friday, 12 March 1649 at St. Mary the Virgin's Church, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire.

     Joan Bull nee Burton died in March 1671, she was survived by her husband Benjamin Bull.

     She was buried, Uttoxeter on Thursday, 12 March 1671; Joan and her husband, Benjamin, are interred in the same grave.

     Elizabeth Whittall, daughter of William Withnall and Elizabeth Muglinson, was born about 1690.
     She was Baptised on Thursday, 20 December 1691 in All Saints Church, Brailsford, Derbyshire .

     Elizabeth Whittall was married to Thomas Bull on Thursday, 8 August 1709 at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, Parish Register says Surname was WHITNALL.¹

     Elizabeth Whittall, daughter of William Withnall and Elizabeth Muglinson, died in July 1730,"age 40."

     She was buried in St. Chad's Church, Longford on Sunday, 16 July 1730.²

     Thomas Bull, son of Richard Bull and Sarah, was born in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, about 1684, possible place of Birth - Parents lived in the Parish.
     He was Baptised on Monday, 14 August 1684 in St. Mary the Virgin's Church, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire .

     Thomas Bull was married to Elizabeth Whittall on Thursday, 8 August 1709 at Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, Parish Register says Surname was WHITNALL.²

     Elizabeth Goodall, daughter of John Goodall and Joan, was born in 1734, calculated from stated age at Death.
     She was Baptised on Friday, 7 May 1734.

     Elizabeth Goodall was married to William Moseley on Sunday, 29 June 1760 at Boylestone, Derbyshire, Bishop's Transcripts.²

     Elizabeth Goodall was left a Widow on the death of her husband, William in February 1771.¹

     Reference: At Lichfield, on 13 March 1771, Elizabeth, widow of William Moseley, stated that he had died intestate, "upwards of fourteen Days since," asked for and secured letters of administration, her bondsmen being Michael Goodall, yeoman, of Weeford, Staffordshire, and John Bull, yeoman, Cubley. On the same day, the same John Bull, obtained a licence to marry Elizabeth. on 13 March 1771 in Lichfield, Staffordshire.
