"The larger part of the churchyard (...Sutton on the Hill) seemed to be occupied by the Bulls. They were laid in lines, almost like a huge family tree spread out on the rough turf. Closer inspection showed only twlve memorials, which included three Thomases and three Williams. Nearest the hedge was the grave of William Allday Bull, my grandmother's eldest brother. He died when only nineteen in 1887 and the headstone added 'also in memory of Annie Bull, died 16th. of September, 1887 aged 17 and interred at Boston Spa, Yorkshire'.
This could only be his sister who had been in 'service' and who was so distraught when she heard of her favourite brother's death that she drowned herself. My mother remembers my Grandmother talking to her sisters about 'poor Annie', but it was not until more than half a century had passed that she was finally told what had actually happened.
Alongside this stone was another pathetic grave: this one of their brother Thomas, only one year old. Like her husband, Rowland Wood, my grandmother had ten brothers and sisters, and of these, three have lived to reach their ninetieth year." - extracted from 'Family Patterns', published in 1971 by J.P.Abbott.6
