Elizabeth Hudson

ID# 20988, born 17 October 1826, died 15 June 1908
Father*Joseph Hudson born say 1790
Mother*Ellen Ball born abt 1795
Elizabeth Hudson, daughter of Joseph Hudson and Ellen Ball, was born in Leek, Staffordshire, on Tuesday, 17 October 1826,      (Birth Date is not as written in the Family Bible.)1
She was Baptised on Friday, 23 February 1827 in Church of St. Edward the Confessor, Leek, Staffordshire .
Church of St. Edward the Confessor Baptismal Register Entry - "Page 9; Entry #69 - Elizabeth, daughter of Ellen and Joseph Hudson, a Weaver of Overton's Bank, was Baptised."2

The Family Bible shows a hand-written entry 'Elizabeth Tipper Born October 17th. 1827'. I believe that this entry was probably written after several children had been baptised as Elizabeth's surname is Tipper and the style of handwriting is fairly consistent with the baptism entries of the children. The entries look to me as though they were written at the same time, as much as 30 years after her stated birth date. With the Parish Record which shows the baptism of an Elizabeth Hudson at St. Edward's Church on 23 February 1827, I think that the Birth date entry in the Bible is a mis-entry and should most likely have been 1826. I have entered Elizabeth's Birthdate in this database as such.3

Father*Thomas Tipper born 1779, died 1862
Mother*Elizabeth Osbourne born abt 1779, died 1853
Daniel Tipper, son of Thomas Tipper and Elizabeth Osbourne, was born in Congleton, Cheshire, on Saturday, 16 March 1811, baptism not yet found.1,2

On 7 March 1833 Daniel Tipper was convicted at Stafford Assizes of the Robbery of William Gould, he was sentenced to Death.
There was a petition for clemency from Daniel's father, Thomas Tipper in which he says that he has a family of two sons and two daughters, which he has endeavoured to bring up respectably by his own industry.
Thomas was a Cordwainer and instructed them in his own trade. Thomas says his eldest son, Daniel, got acquainted with some bad characters in the town of Leek, who were successful in leading him from the path of honesty and the principles of endeavour.
Thomas says he believes that this was his son's first departure from the paths of honesty and that he was convicted principally on the evidence of James Smith, also an accomplice and the principal actor in the robbery.
The Petition is signed by Thomas and also some sixteen persons of "great respectability" including three magistrates, the Vicar, the High Constable, as well as William Gould the prosecutor.
The Jury, as well as the victim William Gould all recommended a "merciful consideration".

The Death Sentence was commuted to Transportation for Seven Years.
Prior to Transportation to Van Diemans Land (Tasmania), Daniel was held on the Prison Hulk - "Justitia" near to Woolwich in Kent. The Convict records give this description - 'aged 23, Born Congleton, a Shoemaker, height 5' 101/2", Brown hair.

          Research Notes :- 12 June 2015
               Hello Martin,
This is in reply to your emails of this morning and Tuesday.
Thanks for the background information on that part of Leek where they lived – Overton Bank figures a lot and I had noticed that bosses and workers seemed to live fairly cheek to jowl.
As regards ‘loose’ Mary #21004, she is one of my mysteries as well, and the isolated 1871 Census entry has been relegated to my “strays” list until now. Your suggestion is that she is Mary #22694, listed twice on the Census, once as Mary Keates with her husband at 35 Alsop Street, and once as Mary Tipper by her Davenport employer, with whom she may have been permanently or occasionally resident. I certainly think that’s feasible – we’ve both seen a good number of examples of people appearing in two different places on a Census, and I agree with what you say about the possibility of her maiden name being used by the employer. The middle name of Mary Davenport Keates is also intriguing, as well as Dorothy’s 1891 position in a later Davenport household, living away from her own family in an identical way. This could just be a coincidence, however, and it’s also possible that Davenport’s Mill played such an important part in the locality generally, to give rise to the adoption of the middle name of Mary Keates junior. Playing devil’s advocate, there’s the question of the 1871 census birthplace given for Mary #21004 as “Kingsley”, whereas Mary #22694 and her siblings all consistently say Oakamoor – though again this could be an employer’s mistake. More importantly, Mary #22694 had two infant daughters at the time of the 1871 Census, the younger of them, Emily, just three months old, and I wonder if it is likely that their mother would have been in a position to stay away from home at an employer’s house, even just occasionally overnight.

I do have another candidate for ‘loose’ Mary, who fits exactly, apart from one rather fundamental detail. She is Sarah Harriet Tipper, your reference #22416. In early April 1871 she was 25, born in Kingsley, and we have not found her elsewhere on the 1871 Census. She is from the family of George Tipper and Hannah nee Mosely, the Kingsley farmers, who were about to make their epic emigration to Ontario, Canada. The rest of the family were scattered about a bit at the time, prior to embarking from Liverpool – George was in Birkenhead, Hannah still on the farm in Kingsley with the four youngest children, and the older children in Glossop and elsewhere. But Sarah Harriet is missing, and was certainly of an age to be in Service somewhere in the district. But of course, there’s the fundamental problem of the christian name. Sarah Harriet tended to call herself Harriet on other Censuses, but whether she’s “Sarah” or “Harriet” can she really be “Mary”??? All I can say is that again we have both seen examples of similar errors, most probably where enumerators have made mistakes in completing the definitive census sheets.

A puzzling one. I’d go as far as to say that 'loose' Mary is one of these two girls – based on the principle that people don’t appear out of or disappear into thin air, certainly not in the Victorian era when there are so many available records. But as to which one she is....???!!!
Best wishes
Chris.2
