John Alexander Tipper

ID# 27253, born 6 February 1883, died 1945
Father*James Tipper born 1 Jul. 1852, died 1943
Mother*Mary Ann Hands born 1855
Relationships6th great-grandson of Richard Tipper
8th great-grandson of Hugh Tipper
4th great-grandson of John Tipper
4th great-nephew of George Tipper
1st cousin 4 times removed of George Tipper
2nd great-grandson of Samuel Tipper
2nd cousin 2 times removed of Robert Tipper
John Alexander Tipper, son of James Tipper and Mary Ann Hands, was born in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, 1883, his Birth was Registered at the Burton Register Office in the Jan-Feb-Mar Quarter of 1883.1

John Alexander Tipper has not been located in the UK Census of 5 April 1891.2
On 2 October 1900 John Tipper enlisted at Burton on Trent in the Lancashire Fusiliers.
In his Attestation Form it is stated that he was 18 years and 8 months old, and had been a Labourer. His height was measured as 5' 41/4" and he weighed 113 lbs. He had a Fresh Complexion, Blue Eyes and Brown Hair. His stated Religion was recorded as Church of England.
He was declared Fit for Service at Lichfield on 6 October 1900 and given the Regimental Number 8164.
His service took him to the following places:-
     Home      2 October 1900 - 4 July 1901               276 days
     Malta      5 July 1901 - 28 November 1901          147 days
     Barbados     29 November 1901 - 26 April 1903          1 yr. 149 days
     Trinidad     27 April 1903 - 18 December 1903          236 days
     St. Helena 19 December 1903 - 8 March 1905          1 yr. 80 days
     S. Africa     9 March 1905 - 7 October 1906          1 yr. 215 days
     Malta      October 1906 - 21 October 1907     1 yr. 14 days
     Home          22 October 1907 - 6 February 1919.

On 1 April 1904 he extended his service duration to 7 years total, and was transferred to Class "Z" Reserve on 16 December 1907.
John was called-up for War Service and mobilized at Bury in Lancashire on 5 August 1914, posted to the 2nd Battn. 3 days later. He was posted to the Lancashire Fusiliers Depot on 10 February 1915, was posted to the 3rd Batt. Lancs. Fusiliers on 9 April 1915. He was posted to the Leicester Regiment at the Humber Garrison on 27 May 1916. He was transferred to the 84th Training Reserve Batt. on 9 June 1916. On 11 August 1917 he was transferred to the Labour Corps. He was posted again several times until 23 January 1918 he joined the Reserve Emp. Company, receiving a Bounty of £20.
Finally, after the end of WW1 he was posted to Nottingham and on 6 February 1919 Transferred to Class "Z" Army Reserve on Demobilization.
His Home address was to be 4 Clarence Street, Burton on Trent.

At the end of Service soldiers were required to complete a "Statement Concerning His Own Case".
205734 Private John Tipper serving with the Labour Corps stated that he had served overseas in France from 20 August 1914 until 16 December 1914 and from with the British Expeditionary Force from 27 April 1918 until 21 December 1918 in the field. He states that he had been hospitalised in the British Base 72nd. General Hospital, Trouville, France.
He also says that his national Health Approved Society was "the Prudential" and that his last employer was "Messrs. Ind & Coopes, Burton on Trent where he was employed as a Labourer".
The Statement was signed by him at The Chester General Hospital on 8 January 1919.
A Service & Casualty Form exists which gives his Rank, Service Number and Corps, his nationality being British and his year of Birth as 1881. His Trade was 'Labourer' and his Marital State was 'Married'.     His Next of Kin was - Wife - Alice Tipper of 4 Clarence Street, Burton on Trent. The place & date of their Marriage is recorded as are the Christian names of 4 of their children together with the dates of their birth (However, I believe that the first 2 listed are daughters of Alice's first marriage).
Prior to locating this 21-page Army Record of Service I had not found John in the 1891 and 1901 Censuses and had not been able to identify his parents neither as I had not located a Baptismal Record. Fortunately on page 6, his demobilization papers, part c records that his parents christian names are shown as James and Mary. There was only one couple in Burton on Trent at the date(s) of his Birth Registration who 'fitted' this with a high probability of being correct, therefore I have placed John in the family of James Tipper and Mary Ann Tipper nee Hands. I acknowledge that this could be resolved in a more positive way by obtaining a copy of John's Birth certificate!!!3

The U.K.Census of 2 April 1911 listed him as a Boarder in the household of Alice Coulton, at 7 Napier Street, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, who is recorded as -
          Alice Coulton     Head     37     Widow, Married 17 years, Children (5) (5) (0)     ---     STS. Burton on Trent.4
John's entry for the 1911 Census was recorded as -
John A. Tipper     Boarder     28     Single     Labourer in Brewery     STS. Burton on Trent.4

John Alexander Tipper, son of James Tipper and Mary Ann Hands, was married to Alice Coulton in Christ Church, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, on Saturday, 23 September 1911.
Their Marriage was recorded in the Burton Registration District in the Jul-Aug-Sep Quarter of 1911.5,6

In the U.K. 1939 Registration for England & Wales, held on 29 September 1939, John Alexander Tipper was recorded as the first person in the 2 person Household at 4 Clarence Street, Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. Also in the Household was Alice Tipper,
the listing for the Household is -
          ; John Tipper;     DoB - 6 February 1882     Male;     Brewery Labourer     Married.7
; Alice Tipper;     DoB - 25 November 1873     Female;     Unpaid Domestic Duties     Married.8

John Alexander Tipper was left a Widower on the Death of his wife, Alice, whose Death was Registered in the Burton Registration District, in the Apr-May-Jun Quarter of 1944.9

John Alexander Tipper, son of James Tipper and Mary Ann Hands, died in 1945 in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, his Death was Registered at the Burton Register Office in the Oct-Nov-Dec Quarter of 1945.10

It should be noted that when John volunteered to join the Army, he stated his age as being 18 years and 8 months.
On his discharge from military service in 1919 his Date of Birth was entered as 6 February 1882.
It appears that he mis-stated his age on Attestation and this DoB was used until he died. His Birth was actually Registered in Q1 of 1883, as I have shown above.
The 1891Census Entry is explained above.11

John Alexander Tipper is entered into the Project as part of a One Name Study,
