By 1870, George was having discussions with his friend William Malkin in Birkenhead, Cheshire, regarding the possibility of the two families emigrating to a region in Ontario, Canada, known as Bracebridge, the Muskoka Road having been built to open this region for settlement on Lake Vernon. This settlement included a tavern, a lumber mill (no doubt having caught the interest of George with his carpentry and building skills) and a store. By 1871, the village contained four large hotels, several mills and numerous stores and by 1875 the village had over 750 inhabitants. On 22 April 1871, the two families arrived in Bracebridge, and, the following day being Sunday, they attended a church service in a room used as an Orange Hall, there being no local church. Thus began many years of service to the church by the Tipper family where they settled in the community of Ravenscliffe, situated about eight miles into the bush from the village of Huntsville. Firstly they worshipped at Mr. Fetterly’s homestead until Reverend Ball urged George to carry on services at the Tipper homestead and obtained a licence for George to be a lay reader. There was no organ but George’s eldest son, John Tipper, had a tuning fork and acted as choir master. In 1876, Bishop Fauquier gave the official Episcopal sanction for George to be the Lay-Reader for Ravenscliffe. The church at Ravenscliffe was finally opened for services in June 1885. George had not lived to see it but his son John, who had also become the community’s lay reader, drew up the plans for the new church which was to be called “Hilltop Church’ after the name of John’s farm. John’s brother, Edmund Walter Tipper, was the first person to be married in the new church. “Great thanks are due to Mr. John Tipper, the Lay Reader, for his efforts and liberality towards erecting a church, he has not only given an acre of good land but has also promised to give all the lumber that will be required, this is a great deal for one settler to give and this community ought to feel grateful to him”. This lovely little church of St. John’s, Ravenscliffe, epitomises the true grit and determination of the early pioneering settlers of the district. George Tipper died on 17 December 1874 aged 59 in Ravenscliffe, Ontario, Canada, and his wife Hannah survived him by 17 years, dying in 1891 at Ravenscliffe.1

George Tipper, son of John Tipper and Elizabeth Bentley, died on Thursday, 17 December 1874, in Ravenscliffe, Ontario, Canada, he was survived by his wife Hannah Tipper.1,9 George Tipper was buried in Huntsville, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada, in December 1874.
