Died of Morbus Cordis, Certified. Informant - James Gill, present at Death, of 80 Uttoxeter New Road, Derby on 22 July 1871", he was survived by his wife Mary Hunt.

The Informant of the Death of Samuel Hunt is very likely to be a James Gill, former Colour-Sergeant of the 41st. Regiment of Foot - the Welsh Regiment. James Gill, who fought at the Battle of Inkerman, retired from the Army in 1861 and came to Derby and formed one of the staff of the 1st. Derby Militia, the headquarters of which were then at the Old Barracks on the Uttoxeter Road. It is very probable that he knew Samuel both as a Soldier and later socially.
According to the dates and places of Samuel and Mary's children it is apparent that Samuel also served in Ireland, India and Jamaica with probable stays at Barracks in Newcastle on Tyne and at Aldershot in Hampshire before being Pensioned from the Army some time in the 1860's.4
