Jesse Plinston

ID# 26247, born around 1810
Jesse Plinston was born around 1810.

Jesse Plinston was married to Sarah Tipper on Saturday, 4 March 1837 at St. Peter's Church, Derby, Derbyshire.1

In the 1841 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 6 June 1841, Jesse was recorded as the first person in the Household at Castle Street, Tutbury, Staffordshire,
also in the Household were Sarah Plinston,
the listing for the Household is -
; Jesse Plinston     25     Glass maker     No, (Not Born in this County.)2
; Sarah Plinston     25     Lace Runner     Yes, (Born in this County.)2

A glass cutting factory had opened in Tutbury in 1810, which extended its operationsn to glass making (= blowing) in 1836. Skilled workers were recruited from existing glass making centres around the country and Jesse appears to have been among the first wave of incomers to settle in the village.3

In the 1851 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 30 March 1851, Jesse was recorded as the Head of the Household at 22 Castle Street, Tutbury, Staffordshire, also in the Household were Sarah Plinston, Charles Plinston and Sarah Ann Plinston,
the listing for the Household is -
; Jesse Plinston     Head     Married     35     Flint Glass maker     LAN. Warrington.4
          ; Sarah Plinston     Wife     Married     35     ---     STS. Tutbury.4
          ; Charles Plinston     Son     ---     7     Scholar     STS. Tutbury.4
          ; Sarah Ann Plinston     Daughter     ---     3     ---     STS. Tutbury.4

In the 1861 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 7 April 1861, Jesse was recorded as the Head of the Household at Burton Street, Tutbury, Staffordshire, also in the Household were Sarah Plinston, Charles Plinston and Sarah Ann Plinston,
the listing for the Household is -
; Jesse Plinston     Head     Married     45     Glass maker     LAN. Warrington.5
          ; Sarah Plinston     Wife     Married     45     ---     STS. Tutbury.5
; Charles Plinston     Son     Unmarried     17     Glass maker     STS. Tutbury.5
; Sarah Ann Plinston     Daughter     Unmarried     13     Scholar     STS. Tutbury.5

Jesse Plinston was left a Widower on the Death of his wife, Sarah, whose Death was Registered in the Burton on Trent Registration District, in the Oct-Nov-Dec Quarter of 1867.6

Jesse Plinstone received unemployment pay from the FGMFS Tutbury District continuously from October 1866 to January 1869. He is described as a "Workman", the most skilled in the Glass Blowers' hierarchy, in charge of a "chair" of four men working a furnace. The records indicate that he was transferred back to his Warrington birthplace at the end of this period, under the Society's scheme for moving unemployed glassmakers to other parts of the country where work was available.
No further trace of Jesse has been found. There was fairly frequent emigration of glass makers from England to North America and Australia at this time, though Jesse was perhaps rather too old to have taken that route.3

Jesse Plinston is entered into the Project as part of a One Name Study,
It is our intention to attempt to link ALL persons with the Surname of TIPPER and their families,
originating in Staffordshire and Derbyshire.7
