The Murder of Thomas Bull 26th April 1927 at Hall Farm, Witherley, Leicestershire
At 6.35am, stud groom George Braddock heard a gunshot at Witherley Hall and found sixty one year old farm bailiff Thomas Bull lying on the ground with fourty year old estate gamekeeper Walter Goldsmith pointing a gun at him and threatening "I will give you another one you *******".
Noticing Braddock, Goldsmith reassured him "It's alright George", before walking off into a spinney where he shot himself.
There had long been bad blood between Bull and Goldsmith. The two men were at constant loggerheads and when Goldsmith was given notice to quit his job and his tied cottage by 1st May he was convinced that Bull was to blame.
When Goldsmith's body was recovered two notes were found in his pocket. The first addressed to his wife said " I cannot bear it any longer. Say goodbye to the children. My heart is broken".
The second letter which seemed to indicate that Goldsmith had intended only to kill himself read " Bull won't get anymore the sack. It's all through Bull. He may consider himself lucky that he is alive".
Coroner George Bouskill held an inquest into the two deaths at which the jury were told that Goldsmith had been rejected by the army because he suffered from fits. When the jury were told that Goldsmith's doctor believed he was "Mentally Unbalanced" they returned a verdict of "Wilfull Murder" against Goldsmith who then commited suicide while of unsound mind.10
